hello! thank you again for all of the help you've provided in that group. There is an abundance of info out there and every little bit helps.
In terms of the shadowing a wedding, etc. I would be willing to do one for free, if it meant getting some experience and some usable shots for my portfolio. I can understand why you have so many request - I can't imagine, and it is a great opportunity for those of us with less experience! If you don't have room I completely understand. Do you happen to have recommendations for someone who might?
In terms of business - my biggest struggle is building a client base, as I have a small family/friend community and aside from offering free sessions, haven't had luck with anything other than Thumbtack (and that is quite limited)
12/21, 10:58amGeorge Day
Is that you in the "Mind of Mo" video about grocery store etiquette? If so, we're gonna' be best friends. Well done, and quite funny (now that you survived that trip!)
12/21, 10:59amMaurissa Jean McNellis
haha! yes that is me.... I blog in my spare time, or mostly when I need to vent about stupid people
12/21, 11:07amGeorge Day
Oh, well then... like I said, we're gonna' get along just dandy. I just came back from whole foods - alone on the freeway, but nonetheless narrating a running profanity-laced opinion piece out loud about the half dozen bozos sharing the road, who had forgotten how to pilot an automobile on dry roads when it's well above freezing. My favorite was the little black sedan that used the right lane before my exit to slow down ON THE FREEWAY to residential speeds, and then to use the entire 1000-foot long deceleration lane to cruise to the light at 20 MPH all the way. Do they know what a lengthy DECELERATION LANE is for?! You can hit that at 65 MPH and slow to 20 without ever once hitting the brake!
There's a ton to talk about, about the photography business, weddings especially. The best thing (since I usually HATE to type so much!) is to come in and sit down and have a chat. Bring a friend or a boyfriend and if I'm not busy I'd be happy to share some info and discuss maybe shooting with you. Do you have a print portfolio to show? Or at least a pad?
12/21, 11:12amMaurissa Jean McNellis
the traffic lately has put me on the verge of manslaughter... it is shocking to me that people will drive faster in 4+ inches of snow than they will on a day like today. That or treating merge signs like stop signs... my blood is boiling just thinking about it.
Where are you located? Would love to swing by with some coffee and introduce myself, and see where I can improve.
Currently my portfolio is 100% digital but I would love to have a printed one.... just clueless as the best way to go about this. Sizes, where to get the prints, how to display, etc. My generation has become so dependent on technology that my website and digital portfolio have been enough to get me through for now haha
12/21, 3:13pmGeorge Day
Here's where I'm at. Let me know what your schedule looks like!
12/23, 7:06pmGeorge Day
Hey, Maurissa - what camera are you shooting?!
12/23, 7:08pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Hey!! So sorry, Christmas preparation has me going 100 miles a minute haha. I have a canon rebel T5
12/23, 7:09pmGeorge Day
Good. You're a Canon shooter. Do you plan to upgrade in 2017? (Maybe Santa will bring you something?!?!)
12/23, 7:10pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
To be honest I'm not... I've already bought some speedy lenses and plan on getting some flash-related equipment before doing anything regarding the body... do you think that's a mistake? Honestly I've been really satisfied with it so far
Spendy, not speedy haha
12/23, 7:17pmGeorge Day
Well, "speedy" is good too (f/1.8 or faster). What lenses have you got?
No, it's not a "mistake" to concentrate on good glass rather than the next body upgrade. But to be honest, the T5 is a really low-end rig. If I did have you shoot any weddings, I'd have you use one of my 5D MkII's. It's full-frame and much higher quality. Your lenses would fit it.
I'm processing last weekend's wedding that I shot with a guy who shoots super-high-end Sony gear and it's driving me nuts because our files are sooo different. When called for, I'll need a 2nd shooter who shoots Canon.
12/23, 7:19pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
I have my body lens, the 50mm 1.8 and a 75-300mm
What's a decent canon body that I could upgrade to without breaking the bank? I spent $400 on the T5 six months ago and that was a big investment for me haha
12/23, 7:23pmGeorge Day
Well, you'd want to step up to a 5D MkII used, and those are running between $900-$1300 used. This ain't a cheap field to be in. When those came out costing $3300, I had to drop ten grand on three bodies (1 for me, 1 for my asst, 1 for backup.) But I shoot paying gigs constantly.
I mis-spoke a minute ago. Your camera would take my lenses, but your lenses may not fit my camera unless they are EF. Do you know if your lenses are EFS lenses or EF lenses?
Sorry, you should be doing Xmas stuff... I'm being annoying! :)
12/23, 7:25pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
No worries!! I just might be slow to respond haha. That's the tricky part - not making any money yet so it's hard to invest in equipment! If I could find one for 900 used that would be doable in the next couple of months. I'm assuming I would still keep my T5 as a backup body versus trading it in though?
And I'll check the lenses in a minute and see
12/23, 7:28pmGeorge Day
12/23, 7:30pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
So it's doable before spring I would say, if I can convince the boyfriend that it's an investment 😏
12/23, 7:31pmGeorge Day
Yeah, that's always the trick. Thank gawd I'm single or I'd still be working some damned "job" to keep my SO happy! Ha!
12/23, 7:32pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Lol thankfully I love my day job so it's not all torture. But this is the year we are buying a house so everything gets examined under a microscope lol. But if you were me, would you keep the backup body or trade it in?
12/23, 7:35pmGeorge Day
If you're serious about your photography and those are EFS lenses, I'd sell the whole mess on craigslist and buy at use 5D Mkii and this lense. https://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-105mm-USM-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000B84KAW/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1482543301&sr=1-1&keywords=canon+24-105
12/23, 7:36pmGeorge Day
A $900 used 5D and a new 24-105 would be in the $1500 range. I can get through 95% of a wedding day on those two pieces and a flash.
12/23, 7:36pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
So my 75-300mm is EF
My standard kit lens that came with the rebel 18-55mm) is EFS of course
And my 50mm is EF
12/23, 7:39pmGeorge Day
Well then, KEEP the EF lenses - they fit the 5D. How fast is that 75-300? With a 5D Mkii, a 24-105 f/4, and my 70-200 f/2.8, and a flash, I can get through 100% of a wedding day unless it's a big church wedding. Then I'm setting up light stands with big lights, umbrellas, etc. And of course I carry a bunch of backup stuff - camera, lenses, flashes, etc.
12/23, 7:40pmGeorge Day
This is why we need to sit down and talk... there's so much to discuss (we're barely scratching the surface here), and this typing gets tedious!
12/23, 7:42pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
I know!!!! I'm gonna look at my calendar after the holidays and pick a day for us to have coffee so no worries there. 4-5.6 appears to be the speed?
12/23, 7:42pmGeorge Day
Yeah, that's what I guessed for that lense aperture.
12/23, 7:43pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Granted I started out in landscape so I thought that would be my favorite lens
And I do still love landscape but it doesn't pay for new equipment lol
12/23, 7:46pmGeorge Day
Yeah, with landscape you want to shoot at those small apertures (f/11, f/16) for max depth of field. But the big apertures (f/2.8 and below) are the name of the game for shooting hot brides and models!
12/23, 7:47pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Yep I just got the 50mm a few weeks ago and I'm obsessed haha
12/23, 7:49pmGeorge Day
You can't get that kind of creamy bokeh at f/5.6, and you have to zoom to get that compression. When you hit the lottery, get one of these...
12/23, 7:50pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Is it just the freaking best
12/23, 7:52pmGeorge Day
Read the reviews on that lense. Apparently it's a killer. It's on my wish list. 9 circular leaves in the shutter, super HSM (high speed motor) so the autofocus is amazing, blah blah blah. But it's NOT image-stabilized which worries me because it's heavy and I'm old and my hands get unsteady after a few hours of lugging a heavy rig.
12/23, 7:53pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Oh yeah I worry about that too, idk if I could do it haha
12/23, 7:54pmGeorge Day
I use a monopod a lot.
I would take that Sigma over the Canon 85mm f/1.2, which is $1900.
12/23, 7:55pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
So insane. That's the other thing - how many options there are for EVERYTHING
12/23, 7:57pmGeorge Day
Yeah, no lie. That's why there's lots to talk about.
Anyway, I'm gonna' go eat and crash early so I can get up and run errands. Nothing like having to hit Whole Foods on Xmas eve to motivate me to get out of here at 8:00 AM sharp!
Let me know next week what your schedule looks like and we'll sit down in my studio and gab.
12/23, 7:58pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Sounds great - thank you so much, you are a lifesaver! And good luck tomorrow, I almost killed four people at target today :)
12/28, 9:45amMaurissa Jean McNellis
Good morning! How late are you typically in your studio on weeknights? Thinking we could meet next week if you'd like!
12/28, 10:38amGeorge Day
I LIVE in my studio, so I'm here 24/7 unless I'm shooting a wedding, etc. What time/day are you thinking?
12/28, 10:41amMaurissa Jean McNellis
It would be after 5pm, but could do a night next week if that would work?
12/28, 10:44amGeorge Day
As of right this second, I only have one wedding prospect lined up to meet with next week, and she hasn't nailed down a time & date. So pretty much any evening after 5:00 should work. Pick one!
12/28, 10:45amMaurissa Jean McNellis
Could we do Monday night then? I could be to you by six and not have to rush home :)
12/28, 10:46amGeorge Day
Sounds good. Let's call it Monday the 2nd at 6:00 PM. Here's directions: https://www.bing.com/mapspreview?osid=c0065279-84d1-4297-a7c0-e3c482cf4794&cp=45.060303~-93.34235&lvl=16&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027
12/28, 10:47amMaurissa Jean McNellis
Perfect!!! I'm really looking forward to it, thank you!
1/1, 4:23pmGeorge Day
Hiya! Just verifying Monday night at 6:00 here at my place.
1/1, 4:23pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Yes sir! I will be there! :)
1/1, 4:24pmGeorge Day
Here's a tip: don't call me "sir." That always makes me feel like I have to go buy a necktie. LOL.
1/1, 4:24pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Oh trust me, I'm not the formal type 😏
1/1, 4:25pmGeorge Day
Yeah, I've seen your videos! Ha! We kinda' F-bomb around here a bit too much.
1/1, 4:26pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
I'll fit right in then!
1/2, 2:56pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Hello! Looks like I'll be leaving work early today. Are you available all afternoon? I could probably be to you closer to 4:30 or 5
1/2, 2:58pmGeorge Day
Sure, let's do that. FB me when you're on the way.
1/2, 2:58pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Perfect! I'll let ya know when I'm wrapping up in Excelsior :)
1/2, 3:22pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Just wrapping up, gps says about 35 mins. Is that too early for you? I can always kill time if I need to :)
1/2, 3:22pmGeorge Day
No, that's fine.
1/2, 3:23pmMaurissa Jean McNellis
Sounds good. My cell is 651-367-4795 if anything changes
